Stralsund Roundtrip

Germany’s eastern most island combines untouched nature and traditional seaside spa towns like Zinnowitz, Bansin, Heringsdorf and Ahlbeck. Explore peaceful forests and lakes far from large cities. Interesting coastal landscapes, reed belt, romantic lakes and natural habitats make this area a true treasure of the German coast. The hinterland of Achterwasser and Peenestrom is a biker’s paradise. The island was defined by the Hanseatic League, the Danes and the Vikings and you will pass many historical monuments and sights on your tour.

Itinerary

1. Day: Stralsund

Independent arrival in Stralsund, the door to the island Rügen. Spend the rest of the day exploring the old Hanseatic League town. The old town centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. End the evening in one of the many cosy restaurants.

2. Day: Stralsund - Greifswald, approx. 40 - 50 km

You pass the Strelasund and a colony of sea ravens in Brandshagen before reaching the old university and hanseatic town of Greifswald. Alternativel, you can cross the Strelasund in Stralsund and bike a few kilometres on Rügen Island, before returning to the original route by Reinberg. The ruined buildings of Eldena Convent near Greifswald with it's Cistercian monastery are worth a visit. Overnight in Greifswald.

3. Day: Greifswald - North-Usedom, approx. 45 - 50 km

You travel through the Ziesebruch between Greifswald and the north of Usedom Island. Charming small villages and lovely old mansions lie on the way to North-Usedom. In Wolgast you cross the Peenestrom and reach your overnight stay at North-Usedom. You spend the night in Karlshagen or Zinnowitz/surroundings.

4. Day: North-Usedom - Bansin/Heringsdorf/Ahlbeck, approx. 25-35 km

Today you bike between the Achterwasser and the Baltic Sea to Germany’s most beautiful beaches by the towns of Bansin, Heingsdorf and Ahlbeck. You spend the night in one of the three towns.

5. Day: Restday

You can spend the day however you like. Relax and stroll through town admiring the grand, old hotels or go on a bike trip to the Polish seaside town of Swinemünde (about 26 km by bike). A visit to the hinterland of the Achterwasser is also recommended.

6. Day: Bansin/Heringsdorf/Ahlbeck - Greifswald, approx. 55-60 km

Enjoy part of the morning in the atmospheric seaside towns before you start out towards the quiet hinterland. The many lakes and creeks are home to various creatures, for example otters. From Anklamm you take a train to Greifswald, where you spend another night.

7. Day: Greifswald - Stralsund, approx. 40 km

You leave Greifswald on pretty trails through the coastal areas of Western Pomerania and cycle back to Stralsund. Idyllic villages and gardens among wide fields define the countryside. You have the opportunity to sample local specialties in one of the quirky wayside restaurants. The Stralsund church towers of St. Mary, Nikolai and Jacobi greet you from afar.

8. Day: Independent return journey or continued stay
