Riesling Wine and Roman history

This bike tour along the Mosel River is not only for wine lovers. The countryside around the Mosel is one of Europe’s most beautiful river valleys – you bike past several picturesque river loops, vineyards, romantic wine making towns, medieval castles and historical towns. The area has an especially mild climate is an important refuge for rare plants and animals like Apollo butterflies, wall lizards, the rock maple and the gagea bohemica. The inhabitants of the French-, German- and Luxemburg Mosel regions have been working together since early history to develop the river as an effective trade route and proved to the rest of the world that peaceful cooperation is possible internationally. This is still reflected in their openness and hospitality. Locked doors are very uncommon in Mosel Country. Many guest economies, mostly allow solid stone or truss and recreaction breaks are on offer to enjoy the regional culinary specialties and light wine with a lot of leisure.

1. Day: Trier

You start your trip in Trier, Germany’s oldest city. Trier, historically known as Augusta Treverorum, was once the centre of the Roman Empire north of the Alps. It is built on the riverbanks, in the midst of lush vineyards. Don’t miss the famous amphitheatre, which fits 20 000 people, the Imperial Baths, once one of the largest Baths structures of the Roman Empire, the Porta Nigra, an impressive victory arc, the basilica, the medieval city walls and all the other historical sights! The Romans may have left the most prominent marks in Trier, but relicts of other times are also to be found. Let 2000 years of history come alive on a walk around town. Apart form its many sights Trier also has a lot of cultural events and attractions to offer. You should definitely spend the evening in one of the traditional wine bars and taste the famous Riesling Wine, while enjoying the historical atmosphere.

2. Day: Trier - Trittenheim/Surroundings, approx. 37/45 km

Today you travel along curvy trails right and left of the Mosel, on old railway tracks, past ancient Roman settlement and through pretty wine making towns like Longuich, Köwerich and Leiwen. In the midst of the charming countryside you will see Roman milestones that mark and the 2000-year-old Roman road along the Mosel. Passing a few more small wine towns you reach today’s destination, the former Franconian town Trittenheim. The city is built on a kind of narrow peninsula in a Mosel Loop. Crossing one of the oldest bridges on the Middle Mosel you can reach the other side of the river and admire the old ferry towers. Also visit the Laurentius Chapel from 1583 and the famous Eselstratt Hinkelstein, a relict of megalithic culture in the vineyards above town. From here you have an amazing view over the Mosel Valley. You spend the night in Trittenheim, Neumagen-Dhron or Piesport.

3. Day: Trittenheim/Surroundings - Bernkastel-Kues/Zeltingen, approx. 20/35 km

The loops of the Mosel get narrower as it winds its way between the Eifel and Hunsrück mountains. You pass Germany’s oldest wine making town, Neumagen-Dhron and reach Piesport, where you can visit the well-restored 4th century Roman keltering system. Via Wintrich, Brauneberg and Mülheim you reach the famous wine town Bernkastel-Kues. Don’t miss the cobble stone market square, which offers a splendid view of ruined Castle Landshut above town. In Zeltingen you can see several impressive buildings of the Mosel Country Baroque. You spend the night in Bernkastel-Kues or Zeltingen.

4. Day: Zeltingen/Bernkastel-Kues - Zell, approx. 34/41 km

Wine lovers will particularly enjoy today’s tour. Numerous lush vineyards suggest a wine tasting session in one of the traditional “Besenwirtschaften”. Travelling on the Mosel Bike Trail you pass quirky wine making towns before reaching Enkirch, a treasure of local truss architecture. Having passed Traben-Trarbach you reach the Mosel loop by Zell, the so-called “Zeller Hamm”. The 900-year-old castle Marienburg sits on a hill above the Mosel. You spend the night in Roman founded Zell, one of the largest wine making communities in the area.

5. Day: Zell - Treis-Karden/Surroundings, approx. 47 km

Via Bullay, an old Roman settlement, you reach Bremm, one of the highlights of the tour. The town is situated in a curve of the river and boasts colourful town houses and narrow, hidden alleys, as well as a view of Europe’s steepest vineyard, the Calmont. The summit offers a breathtaking view over the Mosel Valley. The “Bremmer Hamm” ends here and gives way to the “Cochemer Krampen”, which the Mosel passes in three loops. Via Beilstein you reach Cochem, one of the main towns on the Mosel and famous for its historical town centre, as well as impressive Reichsburg Castle, an exemplary German Romantic Castle. You spend the night in Treis-Karden or the surroundings.

6. Day: Treis-Karden/Surroundings - Koblenz, approx. 39 km

Today the bike trail takes you directly alongside the Mosel to Moselkern. A side trip to close by Castle Eltz, a fairy tail castle with many towers and narrow passageways and add one's worthwhile here. The medieval town of Kobern-Gondorf invites a visit. Between the Mosel and steep vineyards you continue via Winningen to Koblenz, the last stop on your trip. The Mosel joins the Rhine here. People first settled here over 2000 years ago and Romans, as well as Franconians and the French left their mark. See some of the many historical sights and breath the air of history on an evening walk through the picturesque town centre.
