From the Rhine Spring to Constance, Rhine bike Trail Part 1
A recommendation from our regulars
The Anterior Rhine (Vorderrhein) springs from Lake Toma, a small lake near Oberalp Pass in the Swiss Alps. After winding through Surselva Region and the wildly romantic Rhinedelta, aka Swiss Grand Canyon, it meets the Posterior Rhine, which spings from Paradies Glacier, in Reichenau and Bonaduz. From here on the river is called Rhine and passes Liechtenstein and Austria on its way to Lake Constance.
Total length: approx. 185 bicycle kilometres

1. Day: Constance
Independent arrival in Constance. After arrival you have time to explore the old council town and to discover the sights e.g. the council building, the "Unserer Lieben Frau" minster etc. You spend the night in Constance.
2. Day: / 3. Day: Bonaduz
During the day your luggage and bicycles are transported upriver. You take a train (you have to organize this yourself, travel time about 3 hours) and arrive in your hotel in Bonaduz, where Anterior and Posterior Rhine meet. From here you can go by train/bus at the Posterior Rhine and explore the gorge during a hiking to the Via Mala Gorge (half day trip), cycle along the Anterior Rhine as a demanding half-day tour and only with good condition or even cycle up to Oberalp (pass during a full-day trip).
4. Day: Bonaduz – Sargans, approx. 46 km
You now travel alongside the Rhine and reach Chur, the capital of the Swiss Canton Graubünden. Beneath mighty mountains you continue along the bike trail in the valley to spa town Bad Ragaz, where water from the hot springs in the Tamina Gorge has been channelled since 1840. From here it is not far to Sargans, where you spend the night. The castle is worth a visit.
5. Day: Sargans - Feldkirch, approx. 42 km
You continue alongside the Rhine, which also marks the border between Switzerland and the Princedom of Liechtenstein. In Vaduz, capital of Liechtenstein, you have time to see the famous collection of stamps or the Landesmuseum. You cross into Austria and reach the medieval Montfort town of Feldkirch, where you spend the night.
6. Day: Feldkirch – Rorschach/ Arbon/ Egnach, approx. 58 - 70 km
You bike along the Swiss-Austrian border to Höchst, still alongside the Rhine. The river was split here due to minimise flooding danger and now forms the Rhine Delta between its two arms. The Rhine Delta is a protected nature reserve and one of the most important nesting and resting places for birds in central Europe. You cross the Old Rhine and cycle along the shores of Lake Constance to Rorschach, Arbon or Egnach.
7. Day: Rorschach/ Arbon/ Egnach – Constance, approx. 27 – 39 km
Via Romanshorn, the town on Lake Constance with the biggest harbour, you reach Thurgau and its beautiful old villages and orchards, before finally arriving in the medieval Imperial City of Constance, where the Rhine passes the “Konstanzer Trichter”. You have plenty of time to visit Mainau, the so-called Flower Island, or stroll around down town Constance. Individual departure.
We are happy to book an additional night in Constance for you.
